Remembering Walt: Favorite Memories of Walt Disney
Published in Paperback by Hyperion (Adult Trd Pap) (September, 2002)
Authors: Amy Boothe Green, Howard E. Green, and Ray Bradbury
Average review score:

They called him Uncle Walt for a reason
I have read many books on Walt Disney. He is a personal hero of mine. Usually, a Walt Disney book will be all positive or all negative. This book is a bit different. It consists almost entirely of anecdotes told by those who knew Walt both as a friend and a leader, both good and bad.

I feel like I know Walt a lot better after having this book. From the early days of animation to the creation of Disneyland and Walt Disney World... friends, co-workers, and family members describe this complicated man from every possible perspective.

Walt was not a saint or an angel. Nor was he the devil that some recent biographers have tried to make him out to be. He was a human being... a complicated human being. He was a visionary, at least 50 years ahead of his time. Mostly, he was a miraculous, paternal figure in the lives of everyone close to him and a magical, whimsical personality to almost everyone else in the world. They called him Uncle Walt for a reason.

This incredible collection of photos and stories will be treasured by those who love Walt and should be enjoyed even by those with an occasional curiosity in the man who created an empire based on a mouse.

Long Overdue and Just In Time!
After having read exerpts of this book in the June edition of Disney Magazine, I'm looking forward to reading the complete text. It is essential that the remembrances of those who knew and worked with Walt Disney be recorded for future generations. Like Abraham Lincoln before him, Walt Disney's life has taken on legendary proportions even long after his untimely passing. It's important to remember that he was first & foremost, a son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather... and not to forget... the creative genius of the 20th Century. And just in time for the 100th Anniversary of Walt Disney's birth in 2001!

Excellent book for those wanting to know Walt Disney better
This is an excellent book for learning about the man and also getting a better understanding of what this American icon was like. The book is a collection of stories and comments about Walt Disney told by his family, friends and associates. The combination of all the stories gives a unique perspective on the man, his hopes and his dreams.

I appreciated the fact that the comments were a mixture of positive and negative reflections on Walt Disney. I finished the book with the feeling that I knew the man a little better, and have a deeper respect for his work and his vision.

There are plenty of photographs scattered throughout the book of Walt, his family and associates. I felt the photos added a lot to the impressions conveyed by the book. My only complaint is that I would have liked captions for the photos placed with the photos, detailing the time of the photo and who the people in the photo were. Also, I would have liked to see the photos coordinated with the stories. Having both young Walt and mature Walt on the same page seemed a little confusing at times. However, I did not think this detracted at all from my enjoyment of the book . . . I'm just someone that likes to know the details.

Overall, I highly recommend this books to anyone that wants to know Walt Disney, the man, the employer, the business associate and the family man a little better.

Only Hers

Author: Francis Ray

Hers and hers alone!
"Only Hers" is another great one for Francis Ray. "Only Hers" is another episode in the Taggart story. It is the story of Matt Taggart and Shannon Johnson. Matt's heart has been toughened by an unhappy first marriage. Is Shannon woman enough to soften Matt's heart? When Shannon comes to the ranch, it was because of Matt's uncle, Wade, who was a patient of Shannon. Did Wade have an ulterior motive when he left his portion of the ranch to Shannon? Did he somehow know that Shannon was what it took to soften his nephew, Matt's heart? Did Wade realize that it would be Shannon's love, and "only hers" that would ease the heartbreak and renew Matt's faith in women. Well, when you read "Only Hers" you will discover the answers and Wade's intention. "Only Hers" is a story of love and strife, but love wins in the end. "Only Hers" is a great story of two people that are truly made for each other.

SHE DID IT AGAIN!!
MS. RAY, I THOUGHT KANE AND VICTORIA'S STORY (FOREVER YOURS) COULDN'T BE TOUCHED. BUT YOU'VE PROVED THAT WRONG IN THE DYNAMITE LOVE STORY BETWEEN MATT AND SHANNON IN "ONLY HERS." NOT ONLY ARE YOUR LOVE SCENES TO DIE FOR, BUT THE BEAUTIFUL WAY YOUR PLOTS EVOLVE SHOULD BE TAKEN AS A STANDARD FORMAT FOR ALL WOULD BE ROMANCE WRITERS. I CAN'T WAIT TO START DANIEL'S STORY ("HEART OF THE FALCON") AND THEN DOMINIQUE'S. ALL OF WHICH I HAVE. I WISH I COULD GIVE YOU MORE THAN A FIVE STAR RATING!! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!

She Brought Him To His Knees!
Talk about a headache! That's what you can call Matt Taggart, but his's a good headache if you know what I mean, ladies. If you have not seen a man set in his ways then you have not met Matt Taggart. It had to take a women like Shannon to tame that old boy. But I think Shannon enjoyed breaking Matt down. Matt is truly only hers! Know wonder Matt is bestfriends with Daniel Falcon, if you do not know what I am talking about you also need to get Ms Ray other book called "The Heart of the Falcon." Much love to Ms Ray!

Stevie Ray Vaughan: Caught in the Crossfire
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (May, 1993)
Authors: Joe Nick Patoski and Bill Crawford
Average review score:

An extremely in-depth synopsis. Well researched.
I received Caught in the Crossfire as a gift, and I must admit I was skeptical at first. The ominous black cover featuring SRV's silouette seemed to serve as a warning of its content. I feared that the book would only undermine what every fan, indeed everyone who has ever heard of Stevie Ray Vaughan, already knows. That he was, for so long "caught" in a world of reckless drug abuse and alcoholism, but somehow managed to make it to the top. What I found was a biography, mostly matter-of-fact, which left no stone unturned in its research. Every friend, colleague, artist; famous or infamous, who impacted Stevie's career and tragically short life finds their way onto the pages of this work. The bibliography of interviews, while not necessarily reading as a "who's who" in the world of blues, includes individuals who were closest to the guitar legend throughout his life. Paramount of these is his own brother Jimmy. Though not mentioned in the list of exclusive interviews conducted for the book, Jimmy Lee Vaughan's influential guidance in the life of his younger brother is well documented by Patosky. As SRV's hero and kin, we learn where much of Stevie's love for blues music and guitar is rooted. Stevie's mentors in music, from blues legends Albert King and Albert Collins, to Jimi Hendrix and Bonnie Rait are uniquely enveloped in the carnival of ups and downs, triumphs and tragedys of his life. Though at times it tries to unnecessarily re-enact moments in an almost movie script-like format, Caught in the Crossfire is without question the most in depth biography to date of the life of one of the greatest guitar players of our time. It is very well written, and a must for any fan of Stevie Ray Vaughan's music.

A Great Guitar Player with an Interesting Life Story
The life story of Stevie Ray is one of the most interesting I have had the opportunity to read. The book starts years before his birth until after his passing, and this book really clues you in to how he became such and intense player. His story is about a man following in his brothers foot steps who decided the only direction in his life was to play guitar wheather he lived in the gutter or lived rich and famous. It opens your eyes into the musician's life styles and how they got there.
The only drawback to the book was that sometimes the authors get side tracked into too much detail (history of Dallas, Austin, his Mother and Father...), and the language is pretty rough throughout the book. The story of Stevie Ray's life is written well enough that I read the book a second time as soon as I finished. Stevie Ray Vaughn had a unique life.

Awesome Book!
I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan in concert when I was 13 and did not fully realize his genius and/or his talent. I read this book and learned where he got it from and his never-dying passion and spirit for his craft. I remember reading another review that stated the book was complete bull, but I do not think so. Stevie Ray Vaughan played the blues, and he lived the blues. Plain and simple. He has achieved status as one of the Gods of blues guitar and has majorly influenced the playing styles of such people/groups as Indigenous, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang and many others. For those who consider themselves fans of Stevie Ray Vaughan, if you want to know his life story, this book is it.

Sacred Cows and Golden Geese: The Human Cost of Experiments on Animals
Published in Hardcover by Continuum Pub Group (May, 2000)
Authors: Jean Swingle Greek DVM, Jane Goodall, and C. Ray, Md. Greek
Average review score:

Not Just Animals Suffer
Finally, voices against animal experimentation that the medical establishment will not successfully derogate! In this book, scientists and science-minded readers will find exhaustive proof that research and testing that uses animals is not only cruel, but also senseless and dangerous. It's high time someone uncovered how often funds allocated to useless animal-modeled research keep people sick, and how often animal-modeled data make people suffer and even die. Written by a doctor and a veterinarian, Sacred Cows and Golden Geese addresses the topic comprehensively, intelligently, and in a style most readers will appreciate. The Greeks' book should upend misinformation perpetrated by the many, many organizations and businesses that profit from this wholly unscientific convention. As the book explains, delirium over dollars perpetuates animal experimentation. The Greeks write that they regularly debate animal experimenters and animal experimentation lobbyists. Maybe this book will put one of those debates on national television so the public can appreciate the scope of danger and deception animal experimentation exposes us to. I look forward to the Greeks' next book, which they say will cover even more medical disciplines. Everyone should read Sacred Cows and Golden Geese.

Sacred Cows and Golden Geese
A must-read for anyone who wants to know where their tax money ends up and why, despite billions of dollars in grants issued by National Institutes of Health, we still don't have a cure for cancer. Sacred Cows and Golden Geese: The Human Cost of Experiments on Animals opens our eyes to the corruption and graft that pervades the medical research industry. It kept me turning the page with fascinating stories of good research, and unbelievable tales of expensive animal experiments out of control. Easy to read, yet chock-full of carefully referenced factual information, this book reveals how animal experiments have failed medical science. I was amazed to learn how my tax money is funding dead-end, even ludicrous experiments, while less glamorous, but promising research goes unfunded. Definitely an entertaining and educational book, Sacred Cows and Golden Geese: The Human Cost of Experiments on Animals will blow the lid off of some of NIH's dirty little secrets.

why is so little careful criticism of this book to be found?
Animal experimentation is often called a "necessary evil." As the other reviewers say, this book blows the lid off the common claim that animal experimentation is, in fact, "necessary". The Greeks carefully argue that animal experimentation is not (and never has been) necessary for human health and medical progress and that, in fact, human health and safety is often compromised by animal experimentation. Thus, it is only an "evil," for both animals and humans (except for those who profit greatly from it).

Unfortunately, there is little criticism of this book in the literature: carefully read the book and then search for rebuttals. You won't find much. This is not surprising since Dr. Greek often attempts to debate those who make their living on animal experimentation, but more often than not, they won't show up for the debate. Some scientists whine and get emotional about Greek's book, but nobody seriously responds to the Greek's arguments. Nobody provides a scientific case in defense of animal research that is comparable in quality or sophistication to the case against. Animal researchers have, so far, utterly failed at defending what they do from a scientific perspective. Their attempts at doing moral philosophy are even worse. This is unfortunate and one wishes that they would do a better job.

Interactivity By Design
Published in Paperback by Adobe Press (21 July, 1995)
Authors: Ray Kristof and Amy Satran
Average review score:

DESIGN is the key to good multimedia - and this book says it
We use this book as a Bible of sorts. Every idea has a meaning and bearing on the mind of your potential audience for any multimedia project. One of the very few books that deals with DESIGN process in Multimedia development. And good design is the key for any multimedia to work. Interface designing itself is an art after all!

Simple. Clear. Invaluable.
For once, someone makes the distinction between information design, interaction design and presentation design. This book was invaluable in helping our division more clearly define our process for product development.

Art + Science + Design + Psychology
I'm kind of tired of those dense, cerebral, "engineering by acronym" books produced by apparently brilliant programmers or other computer scientists who are doing, teaching, trying interface design. I am still amazed that these two accomplished this 131 page book in 131 pages (not 550). They did it by practicing what they preach: Integrating text with visuals with links (at least within the constraints of the book artifact). I refer to it often just to refresh myself and remind myself of what I enjoy doing for a living. And I still learn from it too. Perfect as a gift for colleagues.

FITNESS IS RELIGION KEEP THE FAITH
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (November, 1997)
Author: Ray Kybartas
Average review score:

Inspirational!!
Ray Kybartas delivers on his promise: this book is a wonderful compendium of practical advice and motivational incentives for a healthy lifestyle. Truly inspirational in tone and images, this book is great if you're looking for reasons to start a fitness routine anew or energize a lagging one. However, some of the diet recommendations are questionable as far as fitting yourself into protein categories - the nutrition advice should be looked at as healthy guidelines and not gospel formulas. But as a fresh point of view on the hackneyed personal fitness market, Ray is da' bomb. Fabulous photos! (California dreamin'...) Read it and be invigorated.

The HOLY BOOK on fitness!
Ray's book is simply marvelous.I became a convert by the time I was through the first two chapters! I had never dreamt that fitness could be presented in such an appealing way.I was sedentary and 115 Kg when I started reading this epistle always dreaming that one day I might come across some fad diet which will deal with my problem. The moment of conversion came when I read that I had to make that Leap of Faith,Believe in fitness to bring me health and weight loss ,then my ears popped open and I heard that inner voice saying "You ought to be a disciple" I'm so greatful to you Ray and you have no Idea what I'll give to meet you in person or get in touch with you by email, God Bless you for blessing us (middle age sedentary unbelievers) with this epistle

Have your sweats ready to go!
This is a really quick read, so I'll caution you to have your sweats and sneakers ready to go when you start reading so you can take right off.

The first time I read this book was at night, and I got so pumped up I wanted to go go go right then and there. The next day was so busy I couldn't do anything and so on the excuses began.

You can't get "the faith" unless you actually begin, so start right away. This book will give you a great outlook and push in the right direction. It is beautiful, and actually gives me an adrenaline rush to read it, Ray is so excited about everything, it's infectious.

There are also some training programs to start you out, and you learn great techniques for interval training etc. and some advanced techniques for things as well. This book can keep you going for awhile.

As, a vegetarian, I don't really like the nutrition section... he goes for a "caveman" diet like "the zone." I do appreciate his points that carbs *are* overeaten, especially processed ones. I'm just not sure eating lots and lots of meat is the solution.

But I digress. If you want to make fitness a big part of your life and are tired of fitness books by phony people who have never struggled with their weight or self-esteem, this book is for you.

Ray is as down to earth and warm as a Hollywood trainer can be!

Special Edition Using Microsoft Word 2000
Published in Paperback by Que (08 January, 1999)
Authors: Bill Camarda, Bill Ray, and Michael Larson
Average review score:

Good book but I am still looking for more
This book was good but I am still looking for a book for very serious Word users that want to know the limitations of Word as well as the possibilities. This book read a little too much like Word 2000 could do just about anything (this is hardly the case).

I did like the sample projects at the end of each chapter. The projects were simple, applicable and illustrated some good points. I did learn many things from this book, but in developing some fairly sophistocated templates I found a lot of deficiencies or omissions with the book (eg: I thought more could be said about templates).

I think this book is great for a general Word user but a Word developer needs more.

Excellent as a reference or in-depth tour of Word
I considered myself a Word expert, but in this book I immediately uncovered a number of features that make my Word life easier. I have solved some of my long-standing Word problems and I have started to imagine ways I can use some of Word's more powerful features. Word can be so frustrating sometimes, but this book really alleviates that, making me appreciate Word's good side again.

I choose to use this book as a reference. It is well organized, clearly indexed, and includes helpful cross-references throughout the text. There are also hundreds of tips, notes and cautions, though visually these are so numerous they are distracting.

I think a person could also read this book cover to cover as an excellent in-depth tour of Word. I haven't explored the CD yet, but I am enjoying the book so much that I am willing to risk a muscle strain to lug it back and forth between home and office.

Ships With The Kitchen Sink Included
Although I've never been a big fan of Que Books because of their somewhat verbose and difficult to understand diatribe, I was really shocked when I picked up a copy Special Edition MS Word 2000. Perhaps a more accurate statement instead of picked up a copy would be: I rented a crane and hoisted up a copy of this 1400+ page gorrilla. This book is actually quite useful because when you're done reading it, you can take it to your local bowling alley and let it serve as a surrogate bowling ball. Forget joining a health club to lift weights, just pick up a copy of this puppy, turn a few pages....you be in pain for weeks!

All seriousness aside, this is perhaps the best book ever written on Word2000. Camarda really did his homework and it shows. It is gratifying to actually buy something these days and acquire some value along the way for your hard earned bucks. Everything you can possibly think of to do with Word is included and thoroughly explained; the Net, templates, intelligence, etc... You won't get through this book eating a Cheeseburger on a boring Saturday night, believe me. Prepare to do some serious study and look forward to several weeks of focused study. Nicely laid out, good color contrast to prevent eye-strain...in depth explanation...you won't be sorry you bought this book.

Eat Cake
Published in Audio Cassette by Brilliance Audio (May, 2003)
Author: Jeanne Ray
Average review score:

In a word -- yum!
Reading this book is like munching on cake -- homemade cake, not too sweet, with just the right amount of icing. The pages turn quickly and you begin to relax and feel good about the world. And you're tempted: can you get another piece later?

The book's opening is a winner. Ruth, attending a stress clinic, encounters the common exercise to take yourself to a safe place. She has trouble at first but soon realizes her safe space is right inside a warm Bundt cake. Makes me hungry just thinking about it!

Ruth's life is about baking cakes -- from scratch. She bakes to relax. She bakes to win friends. She bakes -- well, to bake! And ultimately baking is what saves her and her family batches of trouble. Her husband's job disappears in a merger. Her father, wrists broken, comes to stay awhile. Her daughter is being a typical teenager. And under the same roof is her mother who hisses and spits like a cat at the sight of her ex-husband, Ruth's father.

Now, Ruth realizes, she really needs those stress classes. Instead, she finds inspiration from her father's physical therapist, a character the dust jacket compares to Cheryl Richardson, and her father himself.

Ruth begins a new venture and that's where the book gets a little heavy on the icing. Ruth is immensely gifted, but talent is not enough, whether you're a baker or a writer. Miraculously, everyone in Ruth's family -- as well as the helpful physical therapist -- contributes a skill or connection to the enterprise.

Plausible? Yes. The author of Girls with the Grandmother Faces published her first book with the help of her family, around her own kitchen table. Lucky? Also yes. In some families the parents would be whiny wet blankets, the daughter a teen pregnancy waiting to happen and the college-age son a delinquent.

I must admit I'm a little biased against books that present starting a business as nearly effortless. However, sometimes you want to enjoy a cake and forget the calories. And sometimes you want to enjoy a well-written feel-good story where the fairy godmother is a composite of most of the folks in the heroine's life and it takes six months, not a wave of the wand, to move the reader to a happy ending.

Sweet book is a delicious break from life
This sweet book is a delicious break from life. Sorry, the dessert metaphors just seem appropriate. Ruth is a member of the sandwich generation; her oldest son is away at college, but she still has a teenage daughter at home and her mother moves in after she is robbed in the middle of a bridge game in her own home. Her husband's company is bought out and he loses his job, and her estranged father has a terrible accident and no insurance and moves in, too. Ruth's way to escape is to use visual imagery; her picture of solitude and bliss is not a mountain retreat or a deserted beach, but a cake. Yes, Ruth visualizes herself surrounded by walls of cake and is comforted. And when the going gets tough, Ruth bakes. Cakes, of course. Every day. Sometimes in the middle of the night, when sleep just won't come. As the family dynamic changes, they all must learn to adapt and adjust, and eat cake. Recipes included. Warning: do not read this book while on a diet.

Jeanne Ray is one of my favorite authors, her books just touch the heart without being cloy or cutesy. Her characters are genuine and people you can care about, her stories are simple yet hit home. She still hasn't topped her first book, Julie and Romeo, which is on my top ten list of favorite books of all time, but this is a very enjoyable read. Her daughter is pretty talented, too - she's Ann Patchett of Bel Canto fame.

A Great Read
I discovered Ms. Ray before I started reading her daughter's books, Ms. Ann Patchett. I'm not sure how I found her, just something about the premise of Julie and Romeo struck a cord, so I read it and enjoyed it so much. Well, then I read her second novel and enjoyed it also, so I was thrilled when this showed up on my amazon recommendations. I curled up with this book and read it in one day, with very few interruptions, and I was so involved with the characters, that by the end of the book, I felt as if I knew them. This is a fun, hopeful read and had some lines in it that I quoted out loud to the family, much to their dismay, since I then had to explain who everyone was and what was going on.
Anyway, read this book when you need a warm, lovely diversion from your life. The main character sees herself in cakes to relieve stress, I used this author's book as my therapy. Thank you Ms. Ray.

Another fine guidebook from Lonely Planet
I recently took this guidebook on a two-week trip around the UK and found it to be just as useful and dead-on as every other LP book I've used (even though it is almost two years old). I looked at some of the others, and this the only budget guide for Britain worth picking up. Forget Fodor's, Frommer's, and Let's Go - this book is all you need for a trip to the British Isles.

The Best All-Purpose Guide to Britain!
I have traveled to England a dozen times and I own current editions of 12 different guidebooks. This is far and away the best. It has the most useful information in the easiest to use format. For one thing it has all the travel planning facts you need. In addition, the destinations are described with writing that is evocative, imaginative and accurate. The recommendations are reliable and I was never steered wrong in selecting lodgings and restaurants. Before I found this book, I had to combine three different books to get all the information that's included in this one. From a veteran traveler, I highly recommend the Lonely Planet guide.

A Great Asset to any trip to Great Britain
This summer I took an awesome two week tour of Great Britain with Contiki Tours. The tour was great because of how it mixed a rigid tour with free time. My free time was excellent thanks to the information in this guide. I had used Lonely Planet before when I visited China. They did a great job on that book and they did a great job on this one. The information, history, culture and advice are priceless. This is a great guidebook to have. Lonely Planet might not have zillions of colour pictures, but it has priceless information and commentary.
